Tested on AVO 160 Tube Tester
Intended mainly as VHF amplifier, as well as wide band and measuring amplifier tube.
Soon the British Radar industry as well used the EF50 as Radar IF amplifier. However, before the outbreak of world war II, EF50 tubes and components of it were originally exported from Holland to the UK for completion of manufacture by Mullard. As the German Wehrmacht invaded Holland, the entire EF50 production line was hastily moved to the UK.
Due to the huge military demand during the wartime, the tube was made as well by Marconi Osram in the UK as the Z90, Mullard as EF50, Cossor as the 63SPT. Also made in Canada by Rogers and the USA by Sylvania, at least, and given British Service type numbers. Tubes were made with an aluminium can cover and this was either plain or painted red. The Rogers tube had a dark grey painted cover.
The earliest Philips EF50 development tubes were all glass with red paint and all pins were bent inwards at right angles to the tube axis. This version is extremely rare and was never used by the military
