Dekatron DoHickie Kit - DD02A PCB & Parts - No Tube.
Dekatron DoHickie kit. This circuit is a level up from the simple spinner kit, as it uses a microcontroller to run a dekatron thru its paces. Preprogrammed, are 4 "patterns", including one that responds to audio, thru an on board microphone input. Its also powered from low voltage. 12VDC or 9VAC are the preferred input voltages. Up to 16VDC acceptable. The circuit only draws 150mA at 12V. A 5.5mm OD x 2.5mm ID power jack is provided, so wallcubes, with current capacities as low as 200mA (higher better) can be used to power it. You're not 'slaved' to the AC line, so power it from your car lighter jack !
This the NEW DD02A Board. This supercedes the older DD02 board. Only minor changes, which include accommodating more common sized 1uf/250V capacitors, and altering some resistor values. Both this kit's instructions and the older one, are found on the same page. Newest shown first.
Also, because it has an on board switching supply, its much safer, than many of the 'direct' AC powered circuits seen on the Web. It still generates 450V, so it will still bite you, if you're not careful. Still, much safer than other circuits. Switcher pulsed and regulated, by the microcontroller.

Dekatron tubes are to be acquired separately, by the buyer. There are many sources available, both on eBay, and elsewhere online. It is not pre-wired for any particular dekatron, so remember to wire across J3 to J4. This is all shown in the instructions at the given link.
Dekatrons are remarkable tubes. They were used from 1950 to late 1960's. They are the tube equivalent of decade counter ICs, but performed this function in a unique and elegant way. Read more about dekatrons here:
