    Description

René Lalique's "Chardons" (Thistle) vase, from 1922, alternates clear glass (the middle of each "side") with large vertical thistle leaves sculpted around each angle. It gives the vase a unique appearance which is strongly enhanced when the leaves have a patina as is the case here. The vase exists in 3 versions, completely clear, in colored glass, and patinated. For me, this is the most interesting version.
This vase's four thistle leaves are entirely covered with a sepia patina which has held remarkably well over the decades. The best way to describe the color is that of autumn leaves. I have taken photos wuth and without a flash to show the difference s depending on the lighting.
"Chardons" is photographed and described (photo 9) in Felix Marcilhac's large book (the unofficial Lalique "Bible"), on page 423 of the 2010 French printing under reference 929. The caption clarifies that it was made until the late 1930's (it was in the 1937 catalogue) and never re-introduced later. The signature  is R LALIQUE  in raised block letters under the base and "FRANCE" etched manually (photo 8).
The condition is excellent: No  chip, break or even visible scratch, and no missing to the patina.
